"Build a mobile app that allows employees to stay connected to all things UHC."

While Associate Design Director at Mirum Agency, I served as the Lead Designer on the discovery, UX strategy and design, and UI design direction of the UnitedHealthcare employee app, Sparq. The app is designed to help UnitedHealthcare (UHC) employees stay connected, informed, and productive.

Early in the discovery phase, the Mirum Research team conducted a series of UHC employee interviews and gathered qualitative feedback around the key themes of feeling productive and feeling connected. Studies indicate employers that allow employees the opportunity to connect will achieve greater employee engagement and ultimately, a workplace with less turnover, increased innovation and enhanced business outcomes.

With over 20K UHC employees in North America alone, the design challenge was to create an experience that piped in personalized data and actionable tasks from Microsoft Office as well as curated UHC content.

Design principles
  • Deliver employee experiences that reflect the level of innovation found in their consumer experiences.
  • Make it easier for employees to get necessary tasks done.
  • Create a culture of inclusivity for employees regardless of being onsite or remote.
Content principles
  • Keep actions and information contextual to the moment…”Show me what I need to know when I need it. “
  • Use "day parting" vocabulary to reinforces the app is smart and personalized.
  • Content should be scannable to capture the context, and easy to jump back in later.

My approach

I facilitated affinity mapping and decision jam workshop sessions to map out the MVP release. These sessions brought together the cross discipline team (design, accessibility, engineering, and product) so that we could maximize our collaboration and engagement within a tight release timeline (5 months). I created an end-to-end clickable prototype that was tested with ~30 UHC employees. After iterating post user feedback sessions, I handed the final wireframes over to a UI designer (Emily Drees) on my team for full page comps and UI component creation. At this writing the app has been downloaded by over 50K UHC employees.
